Work Permits
Secure your authorization to work in Canada with expert guidance tailored to your specific situation and employment goals.
What is a Work Permit
A work permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows a foreign national to work in Canada for a specified period. There are two main types: employer-specific (closed) permits, which tie you to one employer, and open work permits, which allow you to work for any employer (with limited exceptions).
Employer-specific permits typically require a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from the employer, unless the position qualifies for an LMIA exemption under the International Mobility Program. LMIA-exempt categories include free trade agreements (e.g., CUSMA, CETA), intra-company transferees, post-graduation work permit holders, and significant-benefit cases.
Open work permits are available in situations such as post-graduation work permits, spousal permits for skilled workers or students, bridging permits for permanent residence applicants, and International Experience Canada. Requirements and processing times vary by program.
